Stem Cells and the Future of Dentistry

Most people are aware of the promises stem cell research holds for medicinal purposes.  Dentistry is also excited about the possibilities.  Research is underway so that one day the future we will be able to practice regenerative dentistry along with cosmetic dentistry.

There are predictions that include having a stem cell bank for our patients allowing us to be able to design and regenerate teeth and other oral structures.  The will make tooth loss not a problem!  Truly this will be cutting edge technology and will allow some dentists to provide exceptional dental care.

There have been predictions that this could be 5 to 10 years away.  Personally, I am excited about the possibilities but do not see this happening this soon. I do foresee that this can help our profession grow new bone to rebuild areas to accommodate dental implants and to enhance cosmetic dentistry care.  Additionally, it might make trauma cases easier to treat and perhaps to be able to regenerate bone loss from degenerative TMJ disease.
