About Laser Gum Lift Gum Contouring

Your gums are an important element of the appeal of your smile. Your gums provide the perfect frame for your smile, but if you have a lot of gum tissue, your teeth may look shorter than they actually are.

What Is a Laser Gum Lift?

ba 1 new

You may be a good candidate for a laser gum lift if you are unhappy with one or more of the following characteristics:

  • Your teeth look too short
  • You don't like the amount of gum tissue that shows when you smile
  • You feel like your gum line looks uneven

Unlike old methods of the past, a laser gum lift doesn't involve any intrusive cutting of the tissue with a scalpel. Instead, the laser ablates (vaporizes) tissue painlessly.

After the treatment, your gums will be in better proportion to your teeth. The gum line will be symmetrical and even, and you won't have to worry about people being distracted by your gummy smile. Although your gums may feel a little tender for several days after your gum lift, the recovery from this laser procedure is relatively quick.

What are the advantages of using a laser for my gum lift?

The beauty of the diode laser for gum contouring is that the laser energy instantly vaporizes the unwanted gum tissue, and it simultaneously cauterizes the cutting line. This means minimal bleeding, dramatically reduced chances of infection, and a far easier recovery.

Who is a good candidate for a laser gum lift?

If your gums are overly visible, a “gummy smile,” you’re a good candidate for a laser gum lift with Dr. Konig. These are typically done as cosmetic treatments to remove excess gum tissue and show more of the tooth surface. This makes the teeth look longer. That’s why gum lifts are often also known as crown lengthening; it makes the crowns (the visible portion above the gum line) of your teeth look longer.

At Dr. Konig’s, we use our diode laser for our gum lifts. The laser energy gently cuts away excess gum tissue, creating a more uniform, natural-looking scalloped gum line.

How many sessions are required for a laser gum lift?

Our patients from across the Houston area are surprised at how easy these procedures are. This is in sharp contrast to the former method for gum recontouring using a scalpel and sutures.

Dr. Konig only needs a single session to rework your gum line.

How the Gum Lift Is Performed

Dr. Konig will perform the laser gum lift procedure at our comfortable, state-of-the-art dentistry office in Houston. You may only need a mild anesthetic to prevent any discomfort. Dr. Konig is pleased to bring the most advanced technology to his patients to increase your comfort and the quality of your results. Laser gum lifting has many advantages, including:

  • Precise removal/reshaping of gum tissue
  • Reduced bleeding and swelling
  • No sutures
  • Painless

During the procedure, Dr. Konig gently sculpts the gum tissue into an attractive, aesthetically pleasing shape. This is where having a cosmetic dentist's eye for detail and beauty is important. Dr. Konig is personally committed to providing his patients with a great smile. He wants you to feel confident and self-assured every time you laugh, smile, speak and enjoy your time with family, friends and colleagues.

Can the laser energy damage my teeth?

The FDA first approved diode lasers for dental use over 25 years ago. They were studied extensively prior to that approval. The key is the difference in density between the gum tissue and the tooth. The laser wavelength is set to vaporize the gum tissue, while leaving the tooth behind it unaffected.

When people worry about the laser energy used, they are thinking of the lasers of science fiction. The reality of these treatments with Dr. Konig is that the addition of the laser energy has improved the quality and the safety of gum recontouring. Plus, the laser has dramatically reduced the discomfort.

How should I care for my gums immediately after my gum lift?

The first couple of days after your treatment you’ll want to avoid brushing the gum line. You won’t open the closed incisions, but they will be sensitive. After they calm down, you can care for your gums as you normally would.

You never want to apply too much pressure when brushing your gums, as this can make them recede. They need brushing and the gum tissue benefits from the contact, you simply need to have a light touch.

What is the proper method for caring for my gums after they recover?

Moving forward, your new gum line won’t need any special treatment, just your normal, diligent, attentive home hygiene. What does that involve? Twice-daily brushing with a soft bristle toothbrush and ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day are all you’ll need to do. Electric toothbrushes have been approved by the ADA, and they now offer a great option for keeping your teeth and gums in top shape.

You’ll want to brush along your gum line at a 45-degree angle upward on the upper teeth and downward on the lower teeth. This angle helps to remove any food debris while at the same time lightly scrubbing the gums and teeth. It’s important to lightly brush your gums every time you brush your teeth, as this helps keep plaque off them and it stimulates the gum tissue. Flossing is also important to clean just under the gum line between the teeth and to also stimulate this gum tissue.

How long before I can eat normally after having a gum lift?

This isn’t a long recovery. Dr. Konig will describe the kind of foods you should eat, and this will usually only be for a few days. Obviously, you’ll avoid sharp or hard foods. You don’t want to have to chew much. No spicy foods.

How long will the results from my laser gum lift last?

The changes made by Dr. Konig with your gums are permanent. Your excess gum tissue will not regenerate. Your new, higher, scalloped gum line created by Dr. Konig will improve your smile forevermore.

How Can I Prepare for My Laser Gum Lift?

Preparing ahead of time for your laser gum lift can increase your chances for a complication-free procedure and recovery. Before arriving at your appointment, consider doing the following:

  • Consult with your primary doctor to stop any medication that may interfere with your procedure.
  • Wear comfortable clothing on the day of your surgery.
  • Avoid wearing earrings or other piercings for the face, especially tongue piercings to your surgery.
  • Avoid wearing a ponytail or bun. Loose hairstyles work best for this procedure.
  • Eat a well-balanced meal before your surgery.
  • Stock your kitchen with soups and soft foods to make recovery easier.
  • Ask Dr. Konig if there are any other personal preparations you should take before your surgery.

Will a Laser Gum Lift Change the Look of My Face?

If you have a gummy smile or a smile where the teeth-to-gum ratio does not appear balanced, you will see dramatic changes in your smile after the laser gum lift procedure. By reducing the amount of gum tissue that appears within a smile and by sculpting them to best frame each tooth, the appearance of your smile will look different and, ultimately, more aesthetic.

While a laser gum lift will enhance your smile, it’s important to note that it will not change the shape of your lips, mouth, or overall facial appearance.

What Are the Benefits of a Laser Gum Lift?

In addition to improving your smile, a laser gum lift procedure can provide the following benefits to patients including:

  • Achieving a more symmetrical smile
  • Reducing the risk of gum disease
  • Achieving tooth-to-gum balancing
  • Requiring little downtime
  • Painless procedure
  • Minimal swelling and bleeding after the procedure
  • Quick recovery time
  • Ability to clean tooth roots and bone tissue with the laser
  • One-time procedure
  • Resulting in a natural-looking, enhanced smile
  • Increasing self-confidence in patients
