What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Veneers are very thin pieces of durable porcelain that are custom designed for each specific tooth shape and size. The versatility of these veneers mean that they conceal a wide range of cosmetic dental problems, such as:
- Chipped teeth
- Stained teeth
- Worn teeth edges
- Gaps between teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Uneven tooth size and length (Read Related Blog)
Once the finished veneers have been created, Dr. Konig carefully fits and adheres each custom porcelain veneer to the front of each tooth, using a special dental adhesive. This gives you a completely natural-looking smile, without orthodontics or braces. Veneers can usually be designed, fabricated, and placed in just two office visits, and the results are stunning.
Benefits of Choosing Porcelain Veneers
As you consider the various treatments that may suit your smile makeover aspirations, Dr. Konig will help you weigh the pros and cons, and help you decide whether this option is right for you. For good candidates, the benefits of porcelain veneers are many:
- Results in as few as two dental appointments
- Veneer characteristics tailored to your wishes and your facial features
- Natural, lifelike appearance
- Permanent results
- Non-invasive procedure
What Can I Expect at My Consultation?
During your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Konig, he will be happy to discuss anything you want to know about veneers, such as:
How is a Veneers Procedure Performed?
The procedure starts with Dr. Konig custom designing your smile by taking an impression of your teeth. He designs the size, shape, contours and color scheme of each porcelain veneer to best suit your dental and facial features. Our highly trained ceramist then creates each porcelain veneer.
Can Veneers Look Natural?
Porcelain veneers are handmade, in other words, both the shade and shape can be adjusted to suit your specifications. Veneers are stain resistant and can mimic the way real teeth reflect light. If you want them to look natural, it can be done. If you are looking for Hollywood white, this can also be achieved. Veneers are custom-made to suit the individual.
Age Appropriate Custom Veneers
The case above is a gentleman almost 70 and was unhappy with his worn teeth and the color as well. His reservations towards treatment was that they would look fake, like chiclets, and be too bulky. Close up photos of similar cases were shown to the patient so he could see how custom artistic veneer designs could be completed by Dr. Konig and age appropriate veneer design and shading could be utilized. The results… a very happy a confident smile and gentleman.

Does Stain Over Time?
Your natural tooth enamel absorbs the colors of the food and drinks that you consume. Porcelain Veneers do not become discolored over time. The material used deflects stains so that you can enjoy your beautiful smile for years to come.
Are Porcelain Veneers Painful?
No! Most patients report no pain or discomfort at all during treatment. This is because the most porcelain veneer cases are minimally-invasive. The only preparation required for veneers is the removal of a thin layer of enamel from the front of your teeth. Some cases can be completed with no preparation. It depends on the position and shape of your teeth as to whether minimal or non-prep veneers can be utilized.
Who Is an Ideal Candidate for this option?
Porcelain veneers are only an aesthetic treatment for your teeth. They simply cover cosmetic flaws and present a perfect smile. If the flaws with your teeth are simply that, things like a chip or pitted teeth, then porcelain veneers can be a great way to easily get a great smile.
But if you have issues such as decay or gum disease, these problems must be addressed and resolved before veneers can be placed on your teeth.
Will Veneers Damage or Ruin My Natural Teeth?
To place your veneers, Dr. Konig will need to remove a minimal amount of enamel (from 0.3 to 0.5 mm) from the front of each tooth receiving a veneer. This makes room on the teeth for the veneers so that they are the same size as the natural teeth.
This doesn’t damage the teeth, but it does mean that having veneers is a long-term commitment. Because Dr. Konig removes some of the natural enamel from the teeth receiving veneers, this means these teeth will always have to have veneers to cover them. Since veneers can last from 15-20 years, that means you’ll likely need at least one additional set down the road.

How Many Will I Need?
That depends on your aesthetic goals for your smile. If you want to cover a single tooth that is misshapen, we can do that. If you have a gap you’d like to cover, we could place two veneers. Or, you can opt to have all of your visible teeth covered with veneers to create a perfect, bright smile. Most patients seeking a smile makeover opt to have from 4 to 8 veneers placed, although this is totally up to the patient and his or her goals.
Are There any Risks Associated with Having Veneers Placed on My Teeth?
There aren’t any risks when Dr. Konig cosmetically improves your teeth with porcelain veneers. Remember, there aren’t any incisions, so there isn’t any chance of infection. When we shave a tiny amount of the enamel from your teeth receiving veneers, this doesn’t create any risk.
This isn’t a risk, but after you receive your veneers, your teeth may be a little more sensitive to hot and cold beverages and foods. That’s because Dr. Konig removed a small amount of your enamel to place the veneers. This is only a temporary situation, and your teeth with adjust and return to normal sensation.
How Long Does It Take to Have Veneers Placed?
You’ll need two appointments for this procedure. During the first appointment, Dr. Konig prepares the tooth or teeth receiving veneers. Then he takes precise measurements and impressions to guide fabrication of your veneers by our ceramist.
Once your custom veneers are finished, you’ll come in for the second appointment. Dr. Konig will check the fit and color match of each veneer, making minor adjustments as needed. Then he will permanently cement each veneer onto your teeth.
What Are the Pros and Cons of Getting Porcelain Veneers?
Veneers are an incredible way to change your smile. There are tons of pros to placing veneers on your teeth, but there are a couple of things to consider, as well.
Pros
- Veneers have a similar translucence and reflect light in a very similar way to natural tooth enamel, so they look completely natural.
- Veneers are highly resistant to staining, so they continue to look great for years and years.
- They can correct chips, cracks, pit marks, and other tooth imperfections.
- They can cover crooked teeth.
- They can fix gaps between teeth.
- They can make misshapen teeth look perfect.
- They can cover deeply stained teeth.
- They can give the patient a perfect, bright white smile.
- A perfect smile with veneers can give a person a real boost in self-confidence.
Cons
- To place the veneers, some of the tooth enamel needs to be removed.
- Removed enamel cannot be replaced.
- Veneers need to be replaced every 15-20 years, with good care.
- The teeth with the enamel removed must always have a veneer or crown on them.
- There is some risk that the patient may experience some tooth sensitivity due to the removed enamel, although this is usually temporary.
What Are the Alternatives to Porcelain Veneers?
Veneers are a unique long-term cosmetic application to give you a perfect smile. Some people wonder if there are alternatives. Really the only alternative would be to crown the teeth in question. But crowns fit over the entire tooth down to the gumline and are a wholly different option. The one advantage of a crown is that it gives the tooth strength, rather than simply being a cosmetic solution.

Why Are My Porcelain Veneers So Thick?
Some veneers appear and feel too thick. This does not have to be the case. It usually happens due to poor design and planning. Either because the dentist did not remove enough tooth structure or the lab made the veneers too large, not following the proper smile design. Veneers can be made to look natural in size and thickness.
Are They Long Lasting?
With proper care and routing maintenance of your smile, veneers can last decades without replacement. It’s important to address the way your teeth meet together (your bite), and look at the health of the underlying teeth, gums and bone to ensure the veneers can be long-lasting. Some patients may never need to replace them at all.
Teeth Whitening With Porcelain Veneers
Patients with very deep stains (such as those caused by certain antibiotics) or who also wish to address other cosmetic concerns may be better candidates for porcelain veneer treatment than teeth whitening. Unlike traditional tooth whitening, which chemically treats your natural teeth, veneers conceal the teeth behind wafer-thin shells of porcelain. Unlike traditional teeth whitening methods, whose results can fade with time, porcelain veneers deliver a permanently bright smile that resists discoloration for as long as your veneers last (generally 10, 20 years or longer).
