As I was reading the Houston Chronicle this morning, I came across an article that discusses how beauty is associated with symmetry of the face. The article goes on to discuss that people look for facial symmetry in their partners. How does this play into TMJ dysfunction? Interestingly, part of our TMJ neuromuscular dentistry exam involves observations for facial symmetry and asymmetry. Most of our severe TMJ patients exhibit facial asymmetry and are aware of this. Whether it involves a “headbend” or muscles on one side being larger than the other, there is no doubt that TMJ issues can cause facial asymmetry. After treatment, most of our patients have an improved symmetry of their faces in addition to not experiencing the TMJ pain they had before. In overview, I never realized that our Houston TMJ treatment may be contributing to a new form of cosmetic dentistry or rather enhancing ones attractiveness.
