Preparing for Oral Surgery

A dentist and a patient discuss preparations for oral surgery. If oral surgery is an eerie upcoming event on the calendar, there’s no need to fret! However, there are a few things to be aware of before coming in for a dental surgery appointment to make the visit smooth. First, if dental visits invoke feelings of fear or anxiety, don’t hesitate to reach out to Dr. Konig and his team! The first step in ensuring a successful visit to the dental office is to communicate any concerns. We are here to help achieve your dental goals, including making dental visits as comfortable as possible.

Preparing for Before Oral Surgery

If dental anxiety has prevented trips to the dentist in the past, contact our office and see if sedation dentistry might be an option for the scheduled dental surgery. If sedation is an option during surgery, find out the necessary steps for the type of performed sedation. One should discuss these topics ahead of time:

  • Obtain and follow all pre-surgery instructions
  • What food and drink, if any, are allowed
  • How long should one abstain from food and drinks

Preparing for During Oral Surgery

Ask questions relating to the scheduled surgery and any pertinent information for those present during the dental surgery or those driving you to and from the dental office. Come to the surgery in comfortable clothing (we suggest a short-sleeved t-shirt if being sedated to monitor vitals easily). A great tip would be to have contact information for backup transportation if needed.

Another helpful tip for dental surgery or full mouth reconstruction is to bring a box to store dentures or removed teeth.

Preparing for After Oral Surgery

There is no need to wait until after surgery completion to obtain post-surgery instructions. Ask for these instructions while scheduling the dental procedure. Knowing how long the healing process will take for the specific surgery will assist in getting the proper time off from work and obtain assistance with or finding childcare. In preparation for returning home from surgery, make sure:

  • To clean the area that’ll be in use for after surgery healing
  • Arrange transportation to and from the dentist
