Houston Cosmetic Dentist: Tooth Erosion and its Causes and Prevention

Houston Cosmetic Dentist: Tooth Erosion and its Causes and Prevention Questions arising regarding tooth erosion, or tooth wear is quite common. This erosion, like the loss of land from the waves that pound on it, occurs when the hard part of your teeth is worn away by acid or bruxism (grinding). Left untreated, this can cause your teeth to crack, discolor, and even become sensitive. It is stated that the main cause of tooth erosion is acid.  This acid can come from carbonated beverages (diet or regular), energy and sports drinks and pure citrus juice. Another cause is bullemia and Gastric Acid Reflux.  All cause erosion by increasing the acid in the mouth.   How Can Patients Prevent or Control Tooth Erosion? *Cut down on consumption of high acid drinks listed above *If you do drink them, do so quickly and with a straw *After consuming them,  rinse with water * Do not brush immediately after drinking these high acid drinks *Chewing sugar free gum sometime helps by producing more saliva *Use a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste *If you have Acid Reflux, discuss options with your physician If your teeth are already damaged, there are ways to restore and save your teeth in most instances.  Please feel free to call our office with any questions regarding Houston Texas Dentist Cosmetic Dentistry or Houston Porcelain Veneers, Ronald W.
