Patients with facial pain from TMJ are often looking for relief. I have seen so many patients turn to botox injections in their head and neck muscles with hope of relief. I, along with many medical doctors, am not a fan of this treatment. Most of the cases we see have not been properly examined or treated for TMJ problems and have already had or current had botox injections which did not help. For those cases whom it helps, the relief is temporary. This seems to be a way of simply masking the problem as opposed to treated the underlying TMJ pain. So many TMJ patients have been to neurologists, ENT’s, dentists, and other medical pain specialties with no mention of possibility that TMJ has been causing these issues. Correctly diagnosing and treating TMJ has helped to relieve patient’s head and neck pain and relief from headaches too. Dr Susan Herring of Washington University did a research study published in the professional journal, Pain, that supports this as well. In our office, the use of CBCT (3D Scan) has also been invaluable in helping to verify that TMJ can or is contributing to the problem. It does require a new skill in learning how to read these scans.
