Part 3: Dental Revolution
The 3rd part of the changes in dental care that we provide for our patients is that of airway obstruction and sleep apnea. Both which are highly present in the population and has become a health concern for many.
The medical profession has been helping patients with sleep apnea and snoring for some time. The most common remedy, until now, has been the use of a CPAP machine (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). However, less than 60% of patients use them. Having studied extensively in sleep apnea and working carefully with physicians and sleep labs, we have been able to help our patients with these problems with the use of Mandibular Advancement Devices which we fabricate in conjunction with sleep doctors. These are much more comfortable and tolerable than the CPAP machine and the associated masks, straps, and noise.
It has been professionally rewarding to help improve our patients lives and health beyond the scope of only taking care of their teeth. I will continue to monitor and study the new technological advancements that help to bridge the gap with TMJ pain patients and sleep apnea problems as they are associated with the dental structures.
If you have questions regarding sleep apnea and the new technologies available to treat this without CPAP machines, please do not hesitate to call my office, Ronald W. Konig DDS, FAGD, LVIF, a Houston TMJ Dentist and Houston Sleep Dentist, 713-668-2289
