Is My Childs Snoring Normal?

With a practice focused on TMJ and sleep apena issues, I feel it is so important to bring public recognition to the detriments of what happen children snore and what it usually means.  Take a moment to watch this video, Finding Connor Deagan.  This is really sad and quite common.  Perhaps this will help you help a loved one or a friend, child or adult….finding Connor Deagan.

“Snoring in children is not normal, and can lead to developemental problems as well as future TMJ problems.”

Why would a TMJ dentist be involved in these types of cases?  Connor is not alone and this problem of airway issues is common in children, teenagers, and adults. Mouthbreathing is a big indicator of a problem and also affects the development of the dental arches, jaws, and airway as well.  Many people who mouthbreath develop narrow dental arches due to the muscles abnormally stressing the teeth and arches when breeathing.  Having a narrow arch also crowds the tongue which in turn can block the airway even more especially if tonsils are present.

In short, oxygen is king and we will do whatever it takes to oxygen in our lungs.  If this goes untreated, this bad bite can lead to TMJ pain, degeneration of the joints, and even further health breathing issues as an adult. Sleep issues are widely over looked in children and adults.  Take a moment to look for these symtoms in your loved ones:

  • mouthbreathing
  • allergies
  • crooked teeth
  • underdeveloped lower jaw
  • bags under eyes
  • Choking and gasping during sleep
  • Night sweats
  • Morning headaches
  • Dry mouth
  • Impaired ability to concentrate
  • Depression
  • Mood changes
  • Heartburn
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Learning and Memory Problems
