How Dry Mouth Affects Dental Health

We have seen a large increase in patients who are experiencing dry mouth.  This is often a result of some medications that patients are taking.  Unfortunately, most people do not realize the detrimental affects that this has on their teeth from root decay, gum disease and even tooth loss, not to mention the uncomfortable feeling. Patients often start getting decay around their existing dental work such as crowns or porcelain veneers. In addition to regular professional and home care, there are some things that patients can do to help with this problem.  Biotene toothpaste and spray has been well received by our patients and is an over the counter product. Xylitol chewing gum such as Spry and others often help stimulate saliva flow.  There are also several sugarless candies that patients can suck to help as well.  Be certain not to use cough drops with sugar in them, we have seen disastrous effects of this. Professionally, our office applies a dental flouride varnish on the teeth after a cleaning.
