TMJ Disorder Is Not Always Just About Pain

TMJ disorders are often associated with jaw pain, but pain isn’t always the most obvious sign of a problem. The young man pictured here, for example, does not experience TMJ pain; however, his TMJ misalignment has caused his teeth to be worn and broken, affecting his speech and smile esthetics. TMJ-related issues can manifest in many different ways—even without pain.Ā

Some of the less obvious signs and effects of TMJ dysfunction may include:

  • Changes in facial growth and development.
  • Effects on facial appearance and esthetics.
  • Excessive tooth wear, damage, or breakage.
  • An unstable or improperly aligned bite.
  • Airway, breathing, and sleep apnea issues.
  • Pain in the jaw, face, neck, or other areas of the body .

Other points to keep in mind for TMJ:

  • Jaw misalignment (a major TMJ issue)  can affect facial symmetry , which may also impact overall facial esthetics.
  • Worn or broken front teethĀ are most often associated with TMJ issues or a misaligned bite.
  •  Impaired TMJ development can contribute to overbites and/or underbites.
  • Underdeveloped jaw growth can lead to a compromised airway and contribute to breathing problems or sleep apnea.
  • Retractive orthodontic treatment can contribute to TMJ issues, particularly when it alters the position or function of the jaw.

While TMJ disorders can cause significant pain, they don’t always have to hurt to be an issue. Because many TMJ problems can develop without obvious pain or discomfort, they can easily go unnoticed. When left unaddressed, they may progress over time and negatively affect your bite, teeth, facial structure, airway, and overall function.
