Lip Tape: When it Can Help

There has been so much social media and dental attention to Lip Tape as a way to improve one’s breathing and health. Having been involved in airway and jaw development for over 20 years, I feel compelled to provide more information.  It is very important to recognize when Lip Tape can help and when it does not help or should be used.

Lip Tape: When it Can Help

• mouthbreathers with adequate nasal airway

person sleeping with lip tape

• dry lips or mouth

• very little lower jaw retrusion

The goal is to improve nasal breathing, improve sleep quality, improve tongue and jaw posture, and help any mild muscle issues associated with causing TMJ discomfort.

Lip Tape:  When To Avoid Lip Tape

• nasal obstruction (address this first with an ENT)

• moderate or severe sleep apnea

• TMJ pain or TMJ issues

• claustrophic or anxiety issues

• deep overbite

Sometimes lip tape in conjunction with TMJ treatment, a sleep appliance, or CPAP can be considered.

Having a consult with an ENT or TMJ Dentist is prudent and could be helpful in addressing other underlying issues.
