Can TMJ Cause Facial Asymmetry

Yes, TMJ issues can cause facial asymmetry. Many of our patients present with Facial Asymmetry and are looking for non-surgical solutions and some are also looking for pain relief and a more beautiful smile.

This photo shows how the facial asymmetry was corrected with TMJ realignment and building her teeth up to the correct physiologic bite position

Dr. Konig explains, “There are multiple causes for facial asymmetry and addressing the cause is the first step towards correcting this.”

These are some common causes of facial asymmetry:
1) Misaligned jaws

2) Musculature imbalance of facial or cervical muscles

3) Teeth issues : worn teeth, broken, or misaligned teeth

4)   Postural issues: your posture especially forward head posture, can contribute to these problems

5)  Mouth breathing : this causes jaw misalignment and aberrant jaw development

6) Low tongue posture or tongue tie

7) TMJ disorders

By comprehensively addressing multiple factors, it is possible to non-surgically correct many of these cases including overbite correction and underbite correction. This in turn usually provides a healthier face and restores the face to symmetry and better profiles.   This can also be considered a non-surgical dental facelift as we are able to correct the lower 1/3 of the face.

In overview, approaching more than just teeth can change lives, health, facial features, and eliminate TMJ pain.
