Very Surprising Symptoms of TMJ

TMJ disorders are often associated with more common symptoms such as clicking noises or jaw pain.  However, TMJ can manifest itself in multiple ways, many that are not well known and affect other areas of the body as well.  It is for this reason, Dr. Konig emphasizes TMJ misalignment most often affects the alignment of the cervical structures in the neck as well as the jaw.

Dr. Konig explains, “When treating and diagnosing TMJ, it is critical to have evaluate the head , neck, and jaw, not just the teeth.” This also helps to explain why TMJ affects so many areas of the body, some examples of these TMJ symptoms are:

  • Vertigo / Dizziness                                                                                                                                      Vertigo is most unpleasant and is often linked to TMJ. This sometimes occurs as pressure from the jaw joint on the ear and misalignment of the C1 vertebrae can impinge of ear function.  Additionally, muscle tension in the head and neck can lead to dizziness.
  • Numbness and Tingling of the Face                                                                                                  Some patients experience numbness or tingling in their face  or neck. This is most often due to the irritation of the trigeminal nerve. This nerve provides sensation to the face and can be affected by the TMJ misalignment causing tension and inflammation. Simply stated, numbness can be from the TMJ dysfunction can affect the neck , jaw, facial muscles, and even shoulders.

Eye Twitching or irritation

  • This is a less common symptom of TMJ, it happens due to facial muscle spasticity. If one has ruled out other medical issues, this could the cause.

Ear Problems and Ear Pain                                                                                                                              Your jaw joints are very close to your ears.  With TMJ misalignment, the jaw joints can press on the ear area and aggravate the nerves and muscles.  This can lead to ear pain or even a fullness sensation.

Neck and Shoulder Pain

  •     TMJ can cause pain in other areas of the body as it is the “top block” and if the head is

not aligned on the neck it strains the rest of the body including the neck, shoulders, and even

                  your arms.

  • Fatigue and Facial Pain

When patients have TMJ, the muscles become highly overworked and can hurt to even

chew or smile.  Sometimes this gets worse as the day goes on.  The constant pain and

discomfort can lead to overall fatigue, loss of sleep, and even depression.    Facial pain

is exhausting as we use our jaws and facial muscles all day long and even at nighttime.

 Headaches and Migraines

  • This is a very common symptom of TMJ disorders. Once again, this can be caused by the constant strain of the muscles affecting multiple areas of the head and neck.

For these reasons Dr. Konig’s protocols involve a comprehensive assessment which is essential for treating TMJ.  A thorough evaluation of the head, neck, shoulders, jaw, airway, and posture should be included as these all work together.

Most cases can are treated non-surgically beginning with realignment of the jaw and neck relationship with fixed orthotics placing the jaw in a more stable physiologic position which allows the muscles to return to their functional positions. Dr. Konig explains, that a test drive bite realignment is essential too.
