Do I Need TMJ Surgery? Consider Your Non-surgical Options

Posted on .

There are many non-surgical TMJ options available for patients. In many cases, from overbites to TMJ pain and facial asymmetry, there are usually numerous non-surgical ways to help patients. The CBS Horrors of TMJ Surgery made no reference to options patients should consider in place of surgery. These also seemed to be pretty aggressive surgeries.

Focusing on the positive, Dr. Konig explains:

“Our office has been providing non-surgical TMJ treatment for many years, and many patients come to see us as they are not interested in surgery. A careful analysis of the problems needs to consider a comprehensive clinical exam along with an airway assessment, postural assessment, and 3D scan as well. This, along with clinical symptoms, helps determine what options might work in which cases.”

Nonsurgical TMJ Treatment from Dr. Konig

Patty: Thank you for sharing your story today. I know you told us that what brought you to our office was you had some clicking or popping in your jaw. Is that right?

Patient: I did. I had the right side of my jaw coming out of place, popping a lot when I would yawn, when I would eat. And I wasn’t sure whether it was arthritis or what it was. I talked to my regular dentist, and he said I needed to get treated for TMJ. I didn’t want it to get any worse. I think I’ve caused a little damage, but it’s great now.

Patty: And you went through the nonsurgical bite management treatment here?

Patient: I did. Dr. Konig has brought my jaw forward and realigned it. I knew it was out of place; it was obvious with all the popping. And I don’t have any swelling or popping now. I can yawn and eat without any issues. I think, like I said, I caused a little bit of damage but not so much that I can’t live perfectly normally. I’m happy with my bite. My smile is much better. It’s great.

Patty: And do you feel like your teeth have a home now?

Patient: Absolutely, yes. I know when I close my mouth where they go. That wasn’t happening before.

Patty: Okay, great. Thank you, Patty, for sharing your story with us.

Patient: Thank you.
