TMJ is often called the great imposter.  It is truly one of the most complex joints in the body and it's alignment affects more than just the mouth and jaws.  In fact it is the only joint in the body that moves in six dimensions. When treating or diagnosing TMJ dysfunction or TMD, it is essential to do a complete medical history and clinical exam as well.  TMJ pain can also be the cause of neck pain, headaches,  and postural problems. On the flip side, neck problems such as rotation in C1 and C2 can cause TMJ pain.  C1 and C2 problems are not always TMJ problems. Often, all that is needed for occiptial and suprorbital pain is physical therapy distractions. The list is endless and beyond the scope of this article.  However, I think it is essential that patients who are considering TMJ treatment be sure to have a postural evaluation in the office.  This should include but is not limited to head posture, sidebending, evaluation for shoulder drop, hip drop, and for short leg.  In short, take a good look at the whole picture.
