For patients seeking care for TMJ problems or dental implants, there are often some confusing listings by dentists. The important thing for the patients to know is that there is no such thing as a TMJ specialist or Dental Implant specialist. There is no recognized American Dental Association specialty for TMJ or Dental Implant specialist. This being said, I truly feel that these areas should be specialty areas for those dentists who put so much time and learning into these areas. I have personally spent hundreds of hours training and learning about TMJ across the country so as to best be able to care for TMJ patients and help them out of pain and debilitating life conditions. This training includes learning medical implications, postural and neck considerations, and how to recapture and provide long term solutions not only relief. It is important for dentists to understand more than one philosophy of treatment as every case is different. Additionally, learning to read CBCT 3D scans of the jaw, neck, and airway is essential for diagnosis and treatment. Too many times patients are treated by simply placing an arbitrary “splint” in the mouth. Treating TMJ is a constant learning journey and it has been rewarding to help patients who have not been get relief and long term stabilization in the past.
