TMJ Can Be a Pain in the Neck

Houston TMJ Dentist, Ronald W. Konig DDS, FAGD,LVIF realized how many of his patients did not realize their neck pain was from their TMJ problems. In fact, if a patient has neck problems it can increase the probability of getting TMJ problems and vice versa.  Many patients who develop TMJ issues/symptoms also develop a Forward Head Posture (FHP).  This FHP strains the muscles of the neck that not only causes neck pain, but also causes other postural problems with the spine.  Interestingly, for every one inch the head comes forward adds about 10lbs to the spinal load. Any diagnostic or therapeutic treatment of for TMJ must include a cervical (neck) exam.

An article from the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation states that TMJ “should no longer be viewed as a local disorder of the stomatognathic system.  The upper quarter including the stomatognathic system, cervical spine, and shoulder girdle should be evaluated in patients with more complex or persistent symptoms in the head and neck region.”
