We’ve all seen the ads. There’s a new kind of mouthwash that can solve all of your problems – treat cavities, freshen breath, and even keep your teeth white. All with just a few swishes! However, you may have your doubts, especially if you’ve tried brand after brand and none of them seem to do what they say they will. Is mouthwash an important part of your oral health care routine or just a waste of money?
Mouthwash basics
There are different types of mouthwash to choose from that can help you to address different problems. There are mouthwashes with extra fluoride, for bad breath, for tooth whitening, for inhibiting the growth of plaque, and for reducing tooth sensitivity. You can always ask your dentist what he or she recommends.
If you’ve tried different kinds and weren’t impressed, it is possible that it works better than you think it does – a lot of people don’t know that there are some mouthwash “rules” you should follow. Once you find the right mouthwash to address your dental issues, you should wait for a half an hour in between brushing and using mouthwash, because sometimes the chemicals in your toothpaste and the chemicals in your mouthwash can clash and can cancel out each other’s benefits. And, gargle with the mouthwash for at least a minute, to give the mouthwash enough time to work.
The good and bad things about mouthwash
The right mouthwash can kill bacteria, fight gum disease, reduce the risk of cavities, and can mask bad breath. If you use mouthwash, keep in mind that it is not a cure-all for all dental problems – it isn’t a substitute for brushing and flossing. The alcohol in some mouthwashes may also increase the sensitivity of your teeth – an alcohol-free mouthwash is better for gums and teeth.
Mouthwash can be a great addition to your oral health routine when you find the right kind for your needs and use it properly. Dental checkups are an important part of your oral health routine, too!
