The tongue is a powerful muscle! A patient with a tongue thrust can literally reshape the skeletal muscles of the mouth and cause misaligned bites. Oral myofunctional habits can be retrained with proper exercises. Some issues that can happen because of the tongue and or airway issues:
Tongue Thrust Causing Open Bite
Anterior Tongue Thrust: Pt had TMJ pain as well
1) Open bites
2) Overbites
3) Underbites
4) Tongue Thrust
Seek guidance from your dentist or myofunctional therapy before or during any treatment. MFT is part of the equation to correcting these issues non-surgically. Treatments such as using appliances and TMJ therapy are often necessary as well.
