Mouth Breathing and Health Issues as well as TMJ Issues

According to  the peer reviewed clinical Journal of the Academy of General Dentistry, a study published stated that ” the physical, medical, and social problems associated with mouth breathing are not recognized by most health professionals.”  There seems to be a huge increase in these cases which can be attributed to our society of bottle-feeding, processed foods, additives, and industrial pollutants which contribute to allergies and upper airway obstruction and/or mouth-breathing. In children, mouth-breathing is really detrimental and if untreated can lead to abnormal facial and dental development.  This can be in the form of high palatal vaults that push on the turbinate space, narrow faces, gummy smiles, and gingivitis and even crooked teeth.  These features are actually signs of mouth-breathing and dentists and physicians need to be able to recognize and treat them to help these patients. In our office, we see these issues quite frequently and even severe problems in adults that could have been avoided if treated early on.  Some of these patients, in addition to having sleep apnea have developed TMJ pain. In fact, studies have shown that mouth-breathing can lead to asthma, obesity, snoring , bad breath,  sinusitis, TMJ problems, and even obstructive sleep apnea.

In fact, several weeks ago, we saw a 52 year old gentleman who has never slept well and has dentofacial issues subsequent to his mouth-breathing.  We have began treatment for his severe sleep apnea, TMJ problems, and dental-facial problems.  In overview, these are issues that can be corrected in adults and children to help improve their health and quality of life.
