TMJ Disorders (TMD) can lead to a lot of jaw pain and mobility issues. There are more than a dozen symptoms associated with TMD, and several of these warning signs have little to do with your mouth and jaw. Many areas of your body could be suffering due to a misaligned jaw. Our neuromuscular dentist in Houston can help determine if your TMJ is to blame for your discomfort during your dental exam.
What is TMJ?
Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) links your jaw to your temporal bones in your skull. These bones are located near your ears, and the TMJ is the hinge that gives your jaw mobility. TMD occurs when your jaw is misaligned and can be caused by clenching or grinding your teeth, arthritis, stress, genetics and other contributing factors.
The most commonly known TMJ symptoms are:
- Jaw pain
- Difficulty chewing
- Lockjaw
- Clicking or popping jaw
