How to Choose a Dental Implant Dentist

Dental Implants come in all sizes and shapes and there are more than 100 implant companies in the country.  All this creates a conundrum for consumers especially since many dentist advertise that they are dental implant specialists.  Not only is this not true but it is against the law.  The American Dental Association recognizes 8 specialties and  Dental Implant Dentistry is not one of them. In fact,  there are some general dentist whom I totally respect and know more about implants than those professing to be dental implant specialists.  Many times dental implants are not elective, but rather functional cosmetic dentistry™, meaning they are necessary for the patient’s overall health and to create a nice smile as well.

-Many times, it is best to work with general dentists who have expertise in completing the implants and designing where they are to be placed and what type of implant should be used.  These dentists can be looked at as “quarterbacks” to help you obtain the best care, function, and cosmetics.  This is called collaborative dental care as they work with oral surgeons and periodontists to place the implants.

Advice to patients considering dental implants, ask questions:

-how long will it take to heal

-if it is a tooth in the cosmetic area, how will the temporary be handled so you do not have to be without teeth

-Inquire how the esthetics will look

-what type of implant?  Knockoff implants are really difficult to find parts for down the road.

-has the dentist done similar cases before?  Ask to see photos of their work.  By the way upclose photos, not full face photos.

-experience and training

-do not mention taking a 3D scan, if this is not mentioned, it could be time to move to another office

                        – a 3D scan allows for planning and no guess work

-check out the dentists reviews online, look at the overall reviews, not just the one negative review.
