Houston Sleep Apnea Dentist, Ronald W. Konig DDS, FAGD, LVIF has been impressed with the new oral device that he has been using for sleep apnea. Dr. Konig has been using the lingualess Somnadent for over a year for many of his sleep apnea patients. In addition to using computer assisted technology to help determine the correct place for the bite to be taken for an appliance, the new appliance has almost no coverage on the tongue side.
This means that the jaw will have to moved forward less than with older types of sleep appliances that occupy so much tongue space The whole premise of sleep appliances is to move the jaw and tongue forward to keep the tongue from obstructing the airway. Not having to move the jaw as far forward is also more comfortable and less likely to cause any sore jaw joints or TMJ issues. The cases that our office treats are not just simple snoring cases but cases referred by sleep physicians and have had complete sleep studies and followup studies using the appliances as well. Sleep appliances need to be adjusted by using home monitors for patients to properly adjust these devices. Technology continues to improve to allow us to continue to help those who are CPAP intolerant.
