The Four Ws of Sedation Dentistry: Houston Cosmetic Dentist

Who? Many patients have had bad experiences in the past which has led to them being phobic when it comes to necessary or cosmetic dental care.

Why? Dental fear is common among patients and sedation dentistry is a wonderful tool to help those patients with high anxiety undergo treatment in a safe and relaxed state. Other reasons we use sedation dentistry include sensitive teeth, gag reflexes, and even fear of needles.

What? There are several types of sedation dentistry that our office uses:

  1. Laughing gas (nitrous oxide)
  2. Oral Sedation
  3. IV Sedation

Nitrous Oxide works by placing a small mask over the patients nose the patient gets a combination of oxygen and nitrous oxide. Most patients feel happy with this.

Oral Sedation is used when the patient prefers a more sedated state.  A pill is given and is a short acting pill that produces an amnesiac state for the patients comfort

IV Sedation is used when our patients prefer to be out.  We have a Board Certified Dental Anesthesiologist in our office to help these patients.

Where? If you have fears or anxiety, consider seeing a dentist who cares, listens, and understands your needs.  Perhaps call an office you have an interest in and ask questions, if this goes well a consult with the dentist to discuss your situation on a personal level would be next and to discuss which type of sedation might be best for you.  It is truly important to find someone you like and will take extra special care of you.
