Dental Implants for the Medically Compromised Patient

A large number of patients have unstable lower dentures that do not allow them to eat or speak without the denture flopping around. Dental Implant Dentist Dr. Konig utilizes dental implants to stabilize these dentures.  However, sometimes a patient’s health can be a contraindication to placing conventional dental implants.

This is where placing mini dental implants such as 3M MDI, can help. These mini implants can be placed much less invasively than conventional implants and can also be used immediately. This means that we are able to anchor the denture to the mini implants at the same time we place them.

Utilizing mini dental implants truly help anchor the lower denture in place so that patients can eat and speak properly and with comfort.  When lower dentures flop around, they cause sore spots and reduce the amount of force patients can chew with; hence, soft foods become the norm. This can also be detrimental to one’s health as it leads to poor diet and improper mastication of food that is not healthy for the digestive system.

Dr. Konig’s professional opinion is that mini implants are best suited for the lower denture and not the top.  The bone is softer on the upper arch and this can make the procedure less successful. In our office, we also use mini dental implants to help patients during their transitional dental care so that they can function comfortably during this phase.
