Cosmetic Dentistry and Severely Worn Teeth

If you have  severely worn teeth or even wearing, it may be wise to find out the cause of this premature wear prior to considering cosmetic dentistry.  Worn front teeth are an eye opener indicating probable bite problems, TMJ problems, or even airway problems.  There is a reason that these teeth are wearing.

TMJ and Bite Restored to Health and Esthetics

1) Bite problems:  having a bad bite can cause damage to your teeth as it can cause a group of teeth to do more work than others.  It would be similar to only walking on your tip toes all day, your shoes would wear prematurely on the toe area.

2) TMJ problems:  in some cases, patients experience headaches, facial pain, and even joint popping and limited opening.  This can also cause early wear and damage to your teeth.

3) Airway problems: some patients who snore and/or have sleep apnea also grind their teeth in an attempt to open their airway.  This occurs at night and can also destroy your teeth and your health.

4) Bad habits:  biting fingernails, chewing ice, or hard objects can also cause wear

For those who fit in the first 3 categories, I consider it essential to evaluate these issues in conjunction with cosmetic dentistry.   Many times correction of both issues can be accomplished.  If you overlook these problems, why would you not damage your porcelain veneers or cosmetic work the same way you did to your teeth?
