Can TMJ Cause Broken and Worn Teeth?

TMJ dysfunction can cause patients to break and wear their teeth down..  TMJ symptoms or a bad bite is not always simply related to jaw pain, headaches, and other symptoms.  A bad bite is most often the reason that patients continually break their teeth and existing crowns. Rather than continually repair teeth to the bite that is causing this problem, it is better to correct the bite problem  (TMJ treatment) and then restore the teeth to the corrected bite position.

In summary, patients have problems with their teeth for one of three reasons:

1) Decay

2) Gum disease

3) The way the teeth meet together (Bite)

Corrected bite and TMJ: This is a functional cosmetic dentistry case

The photograph to the left shows how this gentleman’s bite continually caused him to have recession, broken teeth,  and broken crowns that were continually repaired. The after photo reflects how TMJ treatment to find the correct bite was completed then the teeth restored to the corrected bite position. This neuromuscular TMJ treatment involved stabilizing the muscles, jaw joints, neck, and teeth. This will enable him to have long term health and teeth and a nice smile.

This also shows how patients do not have to have TMJ pain to have TMJ issues from a bad bite.
