ARE YOU A HUNDRED-PERCENTER? FACTS ABOUT GUM DISEASE

Chances are, you've grown up with the knowledge that brushing and flossing your teeth will lead to good dental health, whether you were told this by a dental professional or just heard it from your parents. And yes, it does all begin with good brushing and flossing. But what about the areas you are probably missing? It's equally important to see your dentist and hygienist regularly to check those problem areas and have a thorough dental cleaning to remove harmful bacteria you may be unable to reach. In essence, it takes all three components to keep your smile healthy and help prevent little problems from becoming big ones.

Did you know....

  • Brushing alone is not enough because it only removes up to 50% of plaque (bacteria).
  • Brushing and flossing only remove 70% of plaque.
  • For optimal gum health, brush, floss, and consult your dental professional to customize your oral care routine and address the remaining 30% of bacteria. Without regular brushing and flossing to remove the plaque, bacteria can build up and infect your gums, teeth and supporting bone. And, if you do have infection (gum disease) in your mouth and are not treated by a dentist, you could lose your teeth. The signs of gum disease are not always obvious and can be painless until it's too late. But the earlier gum disease is discovered, the easier and more successful it is to treat. That's one reason to be sure and see your dentist regularly.
