According to the peer reviewed clinical Journal of the Academy of General Dentistry, a study published stated that " the physical, medical, and social problems associated with mouth breathing are not recognized by most health professionals." There seems to be a huge increase in these cases which can be attributed to our society of bottle-feeding, processed foods, additives, and industrial pollutants which contribute to allergies and upper airway obstruction and/or mouth-breathing.
How TMJ Affects Posture and Causes Pain
What should one expect when going to a dentist who treats TMJ? The old way to do an examination was with palpation of the muscles and maybe a doppler to hear joint sounds. Truly this is an outdated methodology.

Addressing problems in the mouth have much further implications than just straight teeth and chewing. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is another issue that can be traced to orthodontic treatment as well. Functional orthodontics can help prevent these sleep problems too. Obstructive sleep apnea can occur when a person lies down to go to sleep and the tongue is pushed too far back and it blocks the airway which causes no airflow during sleep.
I often recieve questions regarding ear pain when flying and if it is related to TMJ.
It is my feeling that if you do have ear pain when flying it is most likely an ear problem as opposed to TMJ. TMJ issues are most often not affected by changes in the air pressure in the cabin of an airplane, whereas if you have an ear problem this could be painful.

Such a broad question, however, we can generalize to answer this. Barring accidents, trauma, and skeletal abnormalities, the answer lies in the position and movement of the teeth. TMJ can start at childhood when the permanent teeth begin to erupt.
There are many patients who have missing front teeth and would like to have cosmetic dentistry done but are not interested in dental implants or may not be a candidate for dental implants for one reason or another. This is not to say that implants are not a good option, only to recognize that there are other options as well.
