Amazingly a chewing gum that will hopefully prevent and treat certain head and neck cancers is in development.   Dr. Cherie-Ann Nathan who is the chair of Otolaryngology  at LSU School of Medicine has been working with a medicinal chemist to perfect the gum.  As a Cosmetic Dentist, whose office screens for pre-cancerous lesions, this a huge development.

Addressing problems in the mouth have much further implications than just straight teeth and chewing. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is another issue that can be traced to orthodontic treatment as well.   Functional orthodontics can help prevent these sleep problems too. Obstructive sleep apnea can occur when a person lies down to go to sleep and the tongue is pushed too far back and it blocks the airway which causes no airflow during sleep.

There are many patients who have missing front teeth and would like to have cosmetic dentistry done but are not interested in dental implants or may not be a candidate for dental implants for one reason or another.  This is not to say that implants are not a good option, only to recognize that there are other options as well.

A very interesting study that was just released at the  2012 World Congress on Pain in Milan, Italy, states , "that people afflicted with chronic oralfacial pain are much more likely to be debilitated by their condition thatn those with chronic backaches or chronic headaches." Briefly the researchers discovered that patients with TMJ or TMD had the highest proportions of pain that caused disablities.  This goes on to conclude that the significance of this type of pain has been highly overlooked in our society.

Australian researchers have reported on studies that have been examining fish oil as a supplement  therapy for gum disease treatment.  Dr. Allison Coates, PHD, of the University of South Australia states that there is much evidence for fish oil being effective in reducing periodontal disease, but there is a need for more well designed studies  to further evaluate its effectiveness.

Our office is always staying on top of therapies and ways to enhance our patients oral health.
