Sedation Dentistry

Houston, Katy, Sugar Land, and Galveston, Texas

Sedation dentistry means you are sedated so you can be more comfortable while the doctor performs cosmetic dentistry procedures. This is especially helpful if you have fears or anxieties about having dental work done. The goal of sedation dentistry is to provide you with some form of sedation where you are either in a conscious state, but sedated, or in a sleeping state. Either way, you feel more comfortable and will be less anxious or nervous during your cosmetic procedure. You can sail through the entire procedure in a relaxed and pain-free condition and at the end see your beautiful, new smile.

If you have a phobia about dental procedures, there are a variety of methods of sedation from which you may choose. You don’t have to go to sleep completely – the level of relaxation you may achieve can vary depending upon your individual needs.

The types of dental sedation methods currently used by cosmetic dentists include:

  • oral sedatives
  • intravenous (IV) sedatives
  • nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas)

The first three of these methods relax you, but you will still need a local anesthetic for pain.

Depending on which method of sedation, Houston Dentist, Dr. Konig helps you choose, you can achieve various degrees of dental sedation. These differing degrees of relaxation are as follows:

  • anxiolysis or light sedation
  • conscious sedation
  • deep sedation (between a conscious and an unconscious state)
