The Science Behind the Bite

Texas, including Katy, Galveston, Houston and Baytown

Having a healthy bite is one of the most important parts of maintaining your smile and the health of your teeth. At the Konig Center for Cosmetic and Comprehensive Dentistry, Houston cosmetic dentist Dr. Ron Konig always takes the alignment of your bite into account when performing any cosmetic dentistry procedure.

Your bite is the way your upper and lower-jaw come together; in dentistry, the term for this is "occlusion." A healthy bite preserves the alignment of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This is the joint where the lower jaw connects to the skull. Your TMJ allows you to move your jaw in any number of different directions, talk, and chew.

When the TMJ comes out of alignment, it can cause many different dental problems because your body will constantly be trying to regain its proper TMJ position. These painful symptoms are referred to as Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD), and the most common symptoms include:

  • Facial Pain
  • Teeth Grinding
  • Headaches
  • Teeth Clenching
  • Neck Pain
  • Clicking/popping sounds of the jaw

As a result of TMD, you may suffer from cracked, loose, missing, chipped, or broken teeth. To help you regain your smile, Dr. Konig can perform many different cosmetic dentistry procedures to correct these problems:

The TMJ can come out of alignment as a result of many different reasons, but the most common are trauma and dental work that fails to take the bite into consideration, changing your TMJ position.

Dr. Konig has attended the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI) to continue his dental training and learn all about the TMJ and neuromuscular dentistry.  When performing your procedure, Dr. Konig will make sure that your bite remains healthy, preventing you from suffering from future TMD problems.

If you are suffering from TMD symptoms and you like in the Houston or Galveston, Texas area, please schedule an initial consultation at The Konig Center for Cosmetic and Comprehensive Dentistry to talk with Dr. Konig about your bite.
