Dental Fillings Questions
Houston, Baytown, Katy, Galveston, Sugarland, TX.
Q: What types of fillings are there?
A: There are three widely used filling materials: amalgam, composite, and porcelain.
- Amalgam - Also known as silver-mercury fillings, amalgam is really a mix of liquid mercury, small silver bits, and various other metals like copper, tin, or zinc.
- Composite Resin - This is a tooth-colored plastic mix filled with silicon dioxide (glass). When they first came on the scene in the 1960s, they were used mainly on front teeth because they weren't strong enough to stand the wear and tear of chewing pressure. However, they have been greatly improved since then and are currently also used for filling in back teeth too. These fillings are used to fix decayed teeth as well as for cosmetic changes such as color or shape corrections to teeth. These types of fillings are durable, strong, and natural in appearance.
- Porcelain Inlays & Onlays - These are fillings made from porcelain that look and feel the most natural. Not only are they durable and strong, but they are also aesthetic.
Q: Can my old, dark fillings be whitened?
A:Unfortunately fillings can't be whitened. The only way to get them lighter is to replace them. Luckily, there are many new ways to restore your smile to a brighter, natural-looking state. Just make sure to replace old fillings after a tooth whitening procedure, so that the new replacements can match your new, whiter tooth color.
Q: How are composite fillings put in?
A: Putting in composite fillings is a technique sensitive process.
- Once your tooth surface is prepared, the composite material is applied in layers.
- After each layer is placed, a special light is used to harden the composite material.
- When it is all laid in, the material is shaped to fit the individual tooth.
- The composite is then polished to help it resist stains and wear.
Q: Why are inlays and onlays used for larger cavities or restorations?
A: Porcelain inlays / onlays work better for larger cavities or restorations because they cover the problem surface area more completely than simple amalgam or composite fillings. This is a two-visit procedure because the inlays/onlays need to be created at the lab to specifically fit your tooth or teeth. These porcelain products offer greater durability and are stain-repellent. The final results are fabulously natural looking. Another benefit to porcelain inlays/onlays is that your tooth structure may end up even stronger with fewer problems in the future since the inlay or onlay is actually adhered directly to the tooth.
