INDIANAPOLIS — The Texans brought their coaches, personnel people, doctors and rehabilitation specialists to the NFL scouting combine that begins today and ends Monday.
One member of the organization was conspicuous by his absence: coach Gary Kubiak.
Kubiak is missing his first combine after undergoing StumbleUponnose surgery on Wednesday in Houston to help cure a problem with sleep apnea.
Kubiak is expected back in the office on Monday. In six weeks, he'll undergo a second procedure on his throat to help alleviate the problem.
Sleep apnea is caused by a blockage in the airway that can cause one to wake up repeatedly through the night. More than 18 million suffer from obstructive sleep apnea.
Whereas I have no medical records or sleep studies on Coach Kubiak's situation, it is important that other patients recognize that there are non-surgical alternatives to treating sleep apnea. Many patients already have a CPAP machine and cannot tolerate sleeping with them.
Another alternative, which is FDA approved and is not well known, but is very effective, is a mandibular advancement device (MAD) which can be fabricated by highly trained dentists who have special interests in sleep apnea. In many cases, these can be used in place of CPAPs and surgery ( which is often painful and not long lasting although in select cases can be effective).
If you have any questions about non-surgical sleep apnea treatment, please feel free to contact my office, as we have select training and interest in sleep apnea and non-surgical treatment of sleep apnea. Ronald W. Konig DDS, FAGD, LVIF ( a Houston Sleep Apnea Dentist)713-668-2289
