HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE GUM DISEASE?
Gum disease is not always obvious because it is often painless in early to even moderate stages. Dr. Ronald Konig, a Houston Cosmetic Dentist, or your hygienist can check your teeth and gums and determine if you have any evidence of gum disease in your mouth. However, there are some signs that you may notice yourself:
- Gums that bleed or red, puffy, swollen and sore gums
- Gums that are pulled away from the teeth
Teeth that fit together differently when you bite
- Loose teeth
- Infection draining from the gums
- Bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth that doesn't go away
The good news is that early detection of gum disease can be reversed, so it's important to have regular dental care and inform your dentist if you are aware of any symptoms. Gum disease is an infection caused by a sticky, colorless plaque (bacteria), that forms on teeth above and below the gums. Treatment can vary, but non-surgical gum treatment can include the removal of the bacteria from below the gums (Periodontal Therapy), is a good start, along with thorough brushing and flossing.
For those who have senstive gums, there are different ways to numb the area for your comfort as our office has needless anesthesia for gum treatment. For those who prefer to be numb, our office also utilizes Oraverse, which reverses the numbness. This is a new product that works beautifully as our patient's do experience the loss of sensation for 4 hours. No more drooling and numb sensation.
For more information on the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease, you can schedule an appointment at your convenience or call our office with any questions. Ronald W. Konig DDS, FAGD, LVIF 713-668-2289
